Adolf Loos once said "The evolution of culture is synonymous with the removal of ornament from objects of daily use".

I agree with this statement because when you look at the way things are developing in our modern society, the trend seems to be more based around functionality. This is proven through many forms of design today, such as the Mac computer range. The designs of these computer's are very sleek and modern looking but do not involve any intricate detailing. However they are very well know for their functionality, the way they work and the things that you can do with them.

Owen Jones believed that nothing should be built, designed or made without it's purpose as it's foremost priority. That before you decide how to make your object look aesthetically that you must make sure your product, whatever it may be is as purpose built as possible. That the design process involved in coming up with a product must revolve around it's functionality, that it does whatever its suppose to do exactly how its suppose to do it.

Personally I disagree with Owen jones' opinion, I believe that in the world we live in today people care a lot for image and that consumers will be drawn to products that have a great look. As long as the product also does what it's suppose to, it is natural for us to base a large majority of our natural selection on things we think look better and suit us more. It may not be the same for everyone but that comes down to personal opinion, not functionality.

This vase is a perfect example of the continuing curve as it is clearly developed in a rococo style, it was also designed with sensuous impulse in mind as it is a vase that cannot even be used as a vase, there is no way of putting flowers in to it.  This proves that it was purely designed from an aesthetic point of view and was in no way purpose built

The lightbulb was a very important break through in our society and was invented in 1879 by Thomas Alva Edison. The electric light has become something that we humans take for granted and use every single day.
Even though gas lighting was very popular when Edison managed to perfect the his design of the incandescent lamp it was an instant hit and a great design. This is clearly proven by the fact that we still use it in our modern society everywhere, everyday.
